Big Tech in India: Bigger Than Ever in 2026
Amazon, Google and Microsoft together employ well over two lakh people in India across Bangalore, Hyderabad, Gurgaon and Pune — and they keep expanding engineering, cloud and AI teams here. The pay gap with domestic employers remains enormous: a mid-level engineer at any of the three earns what a senior architect makes at an IT services firm.
Compensation Compared (Software Engineers, 2026)
| Level | Amazon (SDE) | Google (SWE) | Microsoft (SDE) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry (L4/L3/59-60) | ₹18–30 LPA | ₹25–40 LPA | ₹18–30 LPA |
| Mid (L5/L4/61-62) | ₹35–60 LPA | ₹45–75 LPA | ₹32–55 LPA |
| Senior (L6/L5/63-64) | ₹60–100 LPA | ₹75–130 LPA | ₹55–90 LPA |
Total compensation including stock and bonus, from public offer data. Stock (RSUs) is 25–50% of senior packages — Amazon back-loads vesting (5/15/40/40), Google and Microsoft vest more evenly.
Amazon India: The Volume Hirer
- Scale: the largest US-tech employer in India — AWS, retail systems, Alexa, ads, fintech (Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi NCR)
- Interview: online assessment → 4–5 rounds: 2 DSA, 1 system design (mid+), 1–2 behavioural built entirely around the 16 Leadership Principles — candidates fail here more than on code. Prepare 8–10 STAR stories mapped to the principles
- Reality check: famous for high performance pressure; also the easiest of the three to enter and a massive resume accelerator
Google India: The Highest Bar, Highest Pay
- Focus: Search, Cloud, Android, AI/DeepMind teams in Bangalore and Hyderabad; Pay/fintech in Gurgaon
- Interview: phone screen → 4–5 onsite rounds: 3 coding (LeetCode medium-hard), system design, “Googliness” behavioural. Hiring committee reviews mean strong-everywhere beats brilliant-somewhere
- Timeline: the slowest process of the three — 6–10 weeks is normal
Microsoft India: The Balanced Pick
- Scale: its largest R&D presence outside the US — Azure, Office, AI teams in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Noida
- Interview: 4–5 rounds: 2–3 DSA (slightly gentler than Google), system design, behavioural + an “as-appropriate” final round
- Reality check: consistently rated the best work-life balance of the big three in India — which is why senior engineers stay
The Realistic Paths In
- Referral + prepared profile (most common): referrals raise resume-screen odds several-fold. Build LinkedIn connections with employees in your target team before applying
- The services stepping stone: 2–3 years at a services firm or GCC (see our TCS vs Infosys vs Wipro guide) → 6 months of DSA prep → lateral entry. The most-travelled road
- Campus: all three run university programs (Amazon WOW/campus, Google STEP, Microsoft Engage) — apply in 3rd year, not final year
- Adjacent GCCs first: Walmart, Uber, Salesforce, Adobe pay 80–90% of the big three with slightly lower bars — excellent both as destination and springboard
The Preparation That Actually Works
- DSA: 150–250 LeetCode problems (heavy on medium) over 3–6 months; patterns beat volume
- System design (3+ YOE): one resource deeply (Grokking or DDIA), then mock designs — URL shortener to Instagram feed
- Behavioural: genuinely half the interview at Amazon; 8–10 STAR stories with metrics
- Resume: impact numbers on every line, ATS-clean format — our ATS guide covers the screens these companies run
Beyond the Big Three
India's GCC boom means 1,600+ global companies now run engineering centres here — banking GCCs (JPMorgan, Goldman) and product GCCs (Walmart, Target, Lowe's) pay ₹25–60 LPA at mid-level with less competition per seat. They're the under-rated move of 2026 — see where they rank in our highest-paying jobs guide.
