Job Summary
The AVP – Engineering Lead is responsible for leading end to end design, development, and delivery of technology solutions for \[business/domain]. The role oversees multiple engineering squads, ensuring high quality, secure, scalable software that aligns with enterprise architecture, risk, and regulatory standards. The AVP acts as a technical leader, people manager, and key partner to Product, Architecture, and Infrastructure teams.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership \& Delivery
Own delivery of complex applications/platforms from design to production support.
Lead multiple agile squads, ensuring predictable delivery, quality, and technical excellence.
Translate business requirements into robust technical solutions and architecture.
Drive adoption of engineering best practices (coding standards, code reviews, design patterns).
Architecture \& Design
Collaborate with Enterprise/Domain Architects to define target architecture and roadmap.
Design scalable, resilient, and secure solutions aligned with enterprise patterns and standards.
Oversee key technical decisions (frameworks, integration patterns, APIs, data flows).
Ensure effective documentation of architecture, designs, and technical decisions.
Quality, Reliability \& DevSecOps
Embed automated testing, CI/CD, and observability into all solutions.
Ensure nonfunctional requirements (performance, scalability, resilience) are met.
Work closely with Security and Infrastructure to ensure compliance with cyber and risk standards.
Drive root cause analysis and permanent fixes for production incidents; reduce technical debt.
Stakeholder \& Product Collaboration
Partner with Product Owners, Business, and Operations to prioritise and plan releases.
Provide technical input into product roadmaps, solution options, and effort estimates.
Represent Engineering in governance, steering committees, and change forums.
People Leadership \& Capability Building
Manage, coach, and develop engineers (backend, frontend, full stack, QA, DevOps, etc.).
Build a high performing, inclusive engineering culture focused on learning and continuous improvement.
Identify skill gaps and define training/upskilling plans (cloud, microservices, security, etc.).
Support hiring, onboarding, and performance management for the engineering team.
Risk, Compliance \& Controls
Ensure all solutions comply with regulatory, security, and data governance policies.
Embed risk and control requirements into design, development, and change processes.
Support audits, risk assessments, and remediation activities related to technology.
Skills and Experience
- *Strong expertise in one or more of:**
- *Backend:** Java / .NET / Node.js / \[your tech]
- *Frontend:** React / Angular / Vue / \[your tech]
- *Integration:** REST APIs, microservices, messaging, event driven architectures
Solid understanding of cloud platforms (AWS / Azure / GCP) and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes).
Hands on experience with CI/CD tools and practices (Git, Jenkins/Azure DevOps/GitLab CI, automated testing).
Knowledge of secure coding, application security, and relevant regulatory/industry standards.
Behavioural Competencies
Strong leadership and ability to inspire and coach engineering teams.
Excellent communication skills, able to bridge business and technical stakeholders.
Structured, analytical problem solver with strong delivery focus.
High level of integrity with a strong commitment to risk management, compliance, and quality.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field; master’s preferred.
Typically, 10\+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3–5 years in a lead/manager role.
Proven track record delivering complex, business critical systems in a regulated environment (e.g., banking/financial services is an advantage).
Experience leading distributed or multi\-vendor engineering teams.
