The Role As Chief Technology Officer, you will own the complete technology vision, network strategy, and engineering execution of the company.
Reporting directly to the board and sitting on the executive committee, you will lead a multi\-disciplinary technical organisation spanning network architecture, engineering, operations, and service delivery.
This is a hands\-on leadership role that requires deep ISP experience – specifically in environments that design, build, and commercialise fabric\-based connectivity, IP transit, DIA, and interconnection products. Key Responsibilities
· Define and execute a future\-ready technology roadmap aligned with business goals, product evolution, and market demand.
· Lead the architecture, deployment, and ongoing optimisation of a resilient, scalable core and edge network that delivers fabric link, interconnect, IP transit, and DIA services.
· Oversee all engineering and network operations teams, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
· Partner with the product and commercial teams to design innovative connectivity offerings and bring them to market at speed.
· Manage strategic vendor, technology partner, and peering relationships, including procurement, contract negotiation, and SLA governance.
· Own the technology budget, ensuring cost\-effective investment in infrastructure, tools, and talent while maintaining world\-class reliability.
· Ensure full compliance with South African regulatory requirements (e.g., ICASA) and international best practices in network security and data protection.
· Act as a public\-facing technology evangelist, representing the company at industry events and with key enterprise and carrier customers.
About You
Must\-have experience \& skills: · 15\+ years of progressive experience in telecommunications or internet service provider environments, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role (CTO, VP of Engineering, Director of Networks, or equivalent).
· Deep, hands\-on ISP background – you have worked directly for a company that provides fabric link services, interconnection, IP transit, and DIA as core products.
· Expert\-level knowledge of IP/MPLS, BGP, peering, Ethernet fabrics, and data centre interconnect architectures.
· Proven ability to lead, develop, and scale diverse technical teams (network engineers, architects, NOC, deployment) – strong people management and mentoring track record.
· Demonstrated success in building and operating carrier\-grade networks, including capacity planning, automation, and lifecycle management.
· Strong commercial acumen – experience managing significant CAPEX/OPEX budgets, negotiating large technology contracts, and aligning technology investment with ROI.
· Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the gravitas to advise the board and represent the company externally. Nice\-to\-have:
· Experience in a telecommunications market, with understanding of local regulatory, fibre, and data centre landscapes.
· Familiarity with SDN, NFV, and emerging network automation frameworks. · Relevant certifications (e.g., CCIE, JNCIE) or a degree in engineering/computer science are valued but not mandatory if compensated by outstanding practical experience.
