The PPC Manager converts confirmed orders into a feasible rolling and drawing schedule, and is accountable for on\-time delivery, mill utilisation and work\-in\-process levels acrossthe plant.
Key responsibilities
1\. Order intake and feasibility
Review every enquiry and order for size (OD × WT × length), grade, specification(ASTM A106/A53/A179/A192/A213, DIN 2391, EN 10305, IS 1161/3589 etc.), tolerances anddelivery date before Sales confirms.
Experience \-Minimum 2 years in PPC
Check feasibility against mill limits: piercing range, sizing mill reduction capability, drawbench pass schedule and maximum area reduction per grade.
Commit delivery dates in writing, based on actual mill load and billet availability, not onSales targets.
2\. Planning and scheduling
Prepare the monthly production plan, weekly rolling programme and daily shift\-wiseschedule for piercing, sizing and cold drawing.
Sequence campaigns by grade, billet diameter and OD group to minimise roll changes,plug/mandrel changes and induction heater re\-settings.
Group sizes on the 14\-stand vs 21\-stand mills to balance load and avoid unnecessarystand changes.
Plan draw routes (number of passes, intermediate annealing, pickling/phosphating)with Production and QA for each cold\-drawn order.
Re\-plan within 2 hours of any breakdown, rejection or urgent order, and publish therevised schedule.
3\. Material planning (billets and consumables)
Calculate billet requirement per order using yield factors (cutting loss, piercing crop, sizing crop, drawing scrap, rejections) by size and grade.
Raise billet indents to Procurement with grade, diameter, chemistry and deliveryschedule; track supplier deliveries (RINL and others) against the rolling plan.
Maintain heat\-wise billet traceability from receipt to finished tube.
Plan rolls, plugs, mandrels, dies, guide shoes, lubricants and pickling chemicals withStores and Maintenance so no campaign stops for tooling.
4\. Production control and WIP
Track actual vs plan by shift: tonnage, pieces, yield, rejections and downtime by stage.
Control WIP between hot mill, pickling, drawbench, heat treatment and finishing; flagany lot idle beyond its allowed time.
Run a daily 15\-minute production review with shift in\-charges, QA and Maintenance;record actions and owners.
Coordinate preventive maintenance windows with Maintenance so they sit inside therolling plan.
5\. Quality and traceability coordination
Ensure every lot carries heat number, grade, size and route card through each stage.
Coordinate with QA on hydro test, eddy current/UT, mechanical testing and third\-partyinspection (TPI) slots so testing does not hold dispatch.
Feed rejection data by defect type, billet supplier and stage to QA and Production forroot\-cause action.
6\. Dispatch and customer commitment
Plan finishing, marking, bundling and packing to match dispatch dates.
Give Sales a weekly order\-status report: produced, in WIP, pending, and revised dateswith reasons.
Escalate any delivery risk to the Plant Head at least 7 days before the committed date.
7\. Systems, MIS and costing inputs
Maintain the planning system (ERP/Excel) as the single source for orders, schedules,WIP and stock.
Publish daily, weekly and monthly MIS: production, yield, mill utilisation, OTIF, WIP,finished stock and slow\-moving inventory.
Provide Accounts with size\-wise and grade\-wise yield and conversion data for productcosting.
Manage finished\-goods and semi\-finished (hollow) stock; propose disposal of non\-moving stock.
8\. Team and improvement
Lead and train the PPC team; set shift\-wise responsibilities.
Drive projects on changeover reduction, yield improvement and lead\-time reductionwith Production.
Decision authority
PPC owns the schedule; Production owns how it is executed. Any deviation from thepublished schedule needs PPC sign\-off, or Plant Head approval if PPC and Productiondisagree.
KPIs
The role is judged on seven numbers, reviewed monthly; targets are set after a 3\-monthbaseline from current plant data.
