About the role

Material master problems are often blamed on SAP. Sometimes the constraint genuinely sits in the system: the data model, workflow design, validation rules or interfaces. Often it does not. Our clients need a specialist who can tell the difference and prove it.

As our Senior SAP Material Master / MDG Functional Consultant, you will lead the technical side of our material master diagnostics and advisory work. You will assess how material data is structured, created, changed and governed in SAP, with or without SAP MDG, and identify where configuration, workflow, validations or integrations cause delay, rework or defects. Working alongside supply chain specialists, you will test proposed solutions for feasibility and turn findings into practical recommendations that business and IT stakeholders can act on.

Key responsibilities

Lead SAP landscape assessments. Review organisational structures, material types, views, classification and maintenance processes across ECC, S/4HANA and, where present, SAP MDG.

Analyse material lifecycle processes in the system. Assess create, change, extension, blocking and retirement processes, including workflow steps, approvals, validations and material status controls.

Assess SAP MDG design where implemented. Review the data model, change request types, rule\-based workflow, BRF\+ decision tables, derivations and validations, and how well they support the business process.

Assess governance without MDG. Where no MDG platform exists, evaluate SAP standard workflow, custom transactions, request forms or third\-party MDM tools and the controls they provide.

Investigate data quality defects. Use table\-level analysis and change documents to evidence where errors originate and how they affect downstream transactions.

Assess cross\-module dependencies. Explain how incomplete or inconsistent views affect MM, PP, QM, SD and valuation, and where they block procurement, production or shipment.

Review interfaces and handoffs. Assess upstream and downstream integrations, such as PLM, specification and artwork systems, and identify manual re\-entry and failure points.

Separate system issues from process issues. Distinguish genuine configuration or technical constraints from process, governance or data\-standard problems, and challenge assumptions on both sides.

Evaluate improvement options. Assess workflow optimisation, automated validation and wider automation opportunities, with an honest view of feasibility, complexity and dependencies.

Produce integrated recommendations. Work with supply chain colleagues to combine technical and business findings, and explain technical issues clearly to business audiences.

Document findings. Prepare technical findings, feasibility assessments and solution recommendations that inform roadmaps and future implementation scoping.

Support practice growth. Provide technical input to proposals and solution design for SAP master data assignments.

What you'll bring

Typically 10 or more years of SAP experience, much of it hands\-on in material master and logistics master data, with a demonstrable record of leading comparable technical assessments or design work.

Deep SAP material master functional expertise: material types, number ranges, field selection, views, classification, material groups, organisational levels and plant\-specific material status.

Strong knowledge of ECC and/or S/4HANA material master structures and processes, including the changes introduced with S/4HANA, and of integration with PP, QM, SD and valuation.

Practical experience assessing material master workflows, validation rules, approvals, interfaces such as IDocs and APIs, and governance controls.

The ability to investigate SAP data and configuration independently, using tables, change documents and configuration review, to establish root causes and judge whether proposed improvements are feasible.

Strong understanding of SAP MDG concepts, including data models, change requests, rule\-based workflow and BRF\+, and how they apply to material governance.

Experience working with business and IT stakeholders on complex material master problems, including leading workshops and writing recommendations for senior audiences.

This role is not suited to profiles limited to data entry, data cleansing, migration or basic SAP support.

Hands\-on SAP MDG\-M implementation or major enhancement experience.

Configuration of MDG change request types, data models, rule\-based workflows and BRF\+.

SAP MDG technical design and optimisation experience.

Also valuable

Pharmaceutical, life sciences or regulated manufacturing experience, including GxP\-validated systems, batch management and quality controls in SAP.

Experience with third\-party MDM or data quality tools.

Exposure to SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Build Process Automation or AI\-assisted data validation tools.

Experience designing global templates across multiple divisions and plants, and SAP certification in MDG or S/4HANA logistics.

Measures of success

Clients understand clearly which constraints are technical and which are process or governance issues.

Technical findings are evidenced from system data and walkthroughs, not assumption.

Recommendations are technically feasible, sized and sequenced, and accepted by both IT and business owners.

Technical and business findings come together as one integrated set of recommendations with supply chain colleagues.
