- *Migration Architect / Technical Lead**
- *Purpose:** Own the technical migration strategy and tooling standards.
- *Role Summary**
The **SharePoint Migration Technical Lead** is responsible for the **end\-to\-end technical leadership** of large\-scale migrations from **SharePoint 2013/2016/2019 on\-premises environments to SharePoint Online (SPO)**. This role owns the **migration architecture, archival strategy, tooling execution, Power Platform customization, and technical governance** across multiple migration waves.
The Technical Lead works closely with **Solution Architects, Migration Factory teams, Security, Compliance, and Business Site Owners** to ensure migrations are **secure, compliant, performant, and business\-aligned**, while minimizing disruption and ensuring successful adoption.
- *Key Responsibilities**
1\. **Migration Technical Leadership*** Act as the primary technical authority for SharePoint Online migration activities.
- Define and enforce migration standards, patterns, and best practices across all waves.
- Lead technical decision\-making for complex site, workflow, and customization scenarios.
- Serve as escalation point for L3 migration issues, failures, and performance bottlenecks.
2\. **On\-Prem to SharePoint Online Migration**
- Lead migrations from SharePoint 2013 / 2016 / 2019 farms to SharePoint Online.
- Design and execution:
+ Site collections
+ Subsites
+ Document libraries
+ Lists and metadata
+ Permissions and security models
* Drive modernization efforts, including
Classic
+ Modern site transformations
+ InfoPath / Designer workflows remediation
+ Web part replacement strategies
3\. **Archival Strategy \& Data Lifecycle Management**
* Design and implement enterprise archival strategies, including
+ Identification of ROT (Redundant, Obsolete, Trivial) data
+ Business\-approved archival criteria
+ Legal hold and compliance alignment
- Define archival vs migration decision frameworks with stakeholders.
- Implement archival solutions leveraging:
+ SharePoint Online Archive
+ Azure storage\-based archival patterns
+ Third\-party archival tooling (as applicable)
- Ensure archival aligns with records management, retention labels, and eDiscovery requirements.
4\. **Migration Tooling \& Automation**
* Lead hands\-on execution and governance of migration tools such as
+ Sharegate
+ Microsoft Migration Manager
+ PowerShell automation frameworks
* Design pre\-migration assessments, including
+ Site readiness scoring
+ Customization and dependency analysis
+ Security and permissions mapping
- Define retry, rollback, and re\-sync strategies for failed migrations.
5\. **Power Platform \& Customization Remediation**
- Lead remediation and modernization of SharePoint customizations using:
+ Power Apps (Canvas \& Model\-Driven Apps)
+ Power Automate workflows
* Convert or redesign
+ Legacy workflows (SharePoint Designer / InfoPath)
+ Custom forms
+ Business process automations
* Ensure Power Platform solutions are
+ Secure
+ Scalable
+ Governed under tenant standards
- Collaborate with Power Platform CoE for governance and lifecycle management.
6\. **Security, Compliance \& Governance**
* Ensure migrations comply with
+ Organizational security standards
+ Regulatory requirements (HIPAA, SOC2, etc., as applicable)
* Validate
+ Permissions inheritance and access models
+ External sharing configurations
+ Sensitivity labels and retention policies
- Partner with Security and Compliance teams on pre\- and post\-migration validation.
7\. **Wave\-Based Migration Execution \& Hypercare**
* Support wave\-based migration planning, including
+ Freeze windows
+ Delta migrations
+ Cutover activities
* Lead technical readiness for
+ User Acceptance Testing (UAT)
+ Business sign\-off
* Provide hypercare technical leadership, ensuring
+ Rapid issue resolution
+ Performance stabilization
+ Knowledge transfer to support teams
8\. **Documentation \& Knowledge Transfer**
* Create and maintain
+ Migration runbooks
+ Architecture decision records (ADRs)
+ Archival and remediation playbooks
* Support KT sessions for
+ Support teams
+ Platform owners
+ Business power users
Required Technical Skills
Core SharePoint Expertise
* Deep hands\-on experience with
+ SharePoint 2013 / 2016 / 2019 (on\-prem)
+ SharePoint Online (Modern Experience)
* Strong understanding of
+ Site collections, hubs, and information architecture
+ Metadata, content types, and managed taxonomy
+ Permissions, AD/AAD integration, and security trimming
Migration \& Archival
- Proven experience leading large\-scale SharePoint migrations (100s–1000s of sites).
- Strong expertise in:
+ Migration assessments and remediation planning
+ Archival strategy and execution
+ Retention, records management, and legal holds
- Hands\-on with Sharegate and PowerShell automation.
Power Platform
* Advanced experience with
+ Power Apps (Canvas and Model\-Driven)
+ Power Automate (cloud flows, approvals, integrations)
- Experience modernizing legacy SharePoint customizations using Power Platform.
Microsoft 365 Ecosystem
* Strong knowledge of
+ Microsoft 365 tenant architecture
+ Azure AD / Entra ID
+ OneDrive and Teams integration considerations
- Understanding of licensing impacts on migration and archival decisions.
Soft Skills \& Leadership
- Strong stakeholder communication skills (technical and executive).
- Ability to translate complex technical risks into business\-friendly language.
- Proven experience leading distributed migration teams (onshore/offshore).
- High attention to detail with strong documentation discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in healthcare, regulated, or highly compliant environments.
- Microsoft certifications in SharePoint, Power Platform, or M365\.
- Prior experience in migration factory or large transformation programs.
