Why Most Fresher Resumes Get Rejected in Seconds
Two filters stand between your resume and an interview: the ATS (applicant tracking system) that scans for keywords and structure, and a recruiter who spends 6–8 seconds on the first pass. The right format beats both. Here's exactly how to structure a fresher resume in 2026 — with section-by-section examples.
The Correct Section Order for Freshers
Freshers have no work history to lead with — so the order changes. This is the sequence that works:
- Header — name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn, GitHub (for tech roles)
- Professional summary — 2–3 lines, not an "objective"
- Skills — grouped, keyword-rich (this is what ATS scans hardest)
- Projects — your substitute for work experience; 2–3 with outcomes
- Internships / training — even 6 weeks counts
- Education — degree, college, year, CGPA (if 7.5+)
- Achievements & certifications — hackathons, ranks, relevant certs only
Keep it to one page. Two-page fresher resumes signal padding, and many ATS parsers mangle page two anyway.
Section-by-Section: What Good Looks Like
1. Header — get the basics right
- ✅ Priya Sharma · Bangalore · priya.sharma@gmail.com · +91-98XXXXXX00 · linkedin.com/in/priyasharma · github.com/priyasharma
- ❌ No photo, no date of birth, no father's name, no full postal address — Indian resume traditions that modern recruiters actively dislike
2. Summary — replace the objective
❌ "Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my skills…" — this tells the recruiter nothing.
✅ "Final-year CS student with 3 deployed full-stack projects (React, Node.js, MongoDB). Solved 300+ DSA problems; built a college-fest ticketing app used by 2,000 students. Looking for a backend developer role."
3. Skills — write for the ATS
Group them and mirror the job description's exact words:
- Languages: Python, JavaScript, SQL
- Frameworks: React, Node.js, Express
- Tools: Git, Docker, Postman, VS Code
If the JD says "React.js" and your resume says only "frontend frameworks", the ATS may score you zero for that keyword. Our full ATS resume guide covers this in depth.
4. Projects — the section that wins fresher interviews
Format each as: Name → what it does → stack → one measurable outcome → link.
✅ "FestPass — QR-based event ticketing web app (React, Node.js, MongoDB). Handled 2,000+ registrations with zero downtime during college fest. github.com/priya/festpass"
Three strong projects beat ten tutorial clones. Deployed > GitHub-only > localhost-only.
5. Education — short and honest
B.Tech, Computer Science — XYZ Institute of Technology, 2026 — CGPA 8.1/10. Include 10th/12th marks only if a JD asks (some services companies filter on them).
ATS Formatting Rules (Non-Negotiable)
- Single column layout — tables and two-column designs break most parsers
- Standard fonts (Calibri, Arial, Helvetica), 10.5–12pt
- No graphics, icons, progress bars or "skill meters"
- Standard section headings ("Projects", not "What I've Built")
- Export as PDF with selectable text — never as an image or Canva flatten
- File name: Priya_Sharma_Backend_Developer.pdf
Resume Format by Fresher Type
| Background | Lead With | De-emphasise |
|---|---|---|
| CS/IT graduate | Projects + skills | Coursework lists |
| Non-CS → tech switch | Certifications + projects | Unrelated degree details |
| MBA fresher | Internships + live projects | Generic committee roles |
| Non-tech roles (BPO/HR/sales) | Communication proof + internships | Technical filler |
