The Team Lead is responsible for the technical direction, planning and day to day execution of a multidisciplinary engineering team delivering defence electronic and electromechanical products from concept through qualification, acceptance and series production. The role combines hands on engineering judgement across electronics, mechanical, RF and mechatronics with people leadership, process discipline and direct accountability for meeting customer specifications, qualification standards and delivery milestones.
- *2\. Key Responsibilities2\.1 Team Leadership and Delivery**
- Lead, allocate and supervise a team of 5 to 15 engineers and technicians across electronics, mechanical, RF and mechatronics disciplines.
- Break down programme requirements into work packages, estimate effort, publish schedules and track progress against milestones.
- Conduct design reviews, technical mentoring, skill gap assessment, training plans and periodic performance appraisals.
- Resolve inter discipline conflicts, manage resource loading across concurrent programmes and escalate risks with proposed mitigation.
- Build succession depth by cross training team members and maintaining documented technical know how within the team.
- *2\.2 Technical and Design Ownership**
- Own the system level architecture and interface definition for assigned products, ensuring electronics, mechanical, RF and firmware elements integrate correctly.
- Apply a reasonable understanding of schematics, PCB layouts, RF chains and link budgets, mechanical drawings, tolerance stacks, thermal and structural analysis, wiring harnesses and actuator or servo control loops.
- Drive design for reliability, maintainability, manufacturability, testability and environmental ruggedisation (shock, vibration, temperature, humidity, salt fog, ingress protection).
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective action for design, production and field failures using structured tools such as 8D, FMEA, FTA and Ishikawa.
- Support obsolescence management, component selection, derating, indigenisation and alternate part qualification.
- *2\.3 Defence Process, Documentation and Compliance**
- Translate customer requirement documents, tender specifications, QRs and SoCs into verifiable engineering requirements with traceability to test evidence.
- Prepare, review and release the technical data package: specification documents, ICDs, design documents, BoM, drawings, test plans, ATP, QTP, user and maintenance manuals, and spares lists.
- *2\.4 Qualification, Testing and Acceptance**
- Define and execute Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP), Qualification Test Plans, environmental stress screening and pre despatch inspection.
- Plan and oversee qualification against military standards, including environmental testing (MIL\-STD\-810 or JSS 55555 class), EMI and EMC testing (MIL\-STD\-461 / CE, CS, RE, RS tests), power interface and electrical characteristics (MIL\-STD\-704 / MIL\-STD\-1275\), safety and system level electromagnetic effects (MIL\-STD\-464\), and workmanship and reliability standards (IPC and MIL\-HDBK\-217 or equivalent).
- Coordinate with in house and NABL or government accredited external test laboratories, review test reports, close non conformances and obtain qualification clearance.
- Maintain the verification and validation matrix demonstrating that every specification clause is tested, analysed, inspected or demonstrated.
- *3\. Essential Requirements**
- Minimum 3 years of experience in hardware or product engineering, including at least 1 year leading a small team, a module or a project (formal or informal).
- Experience in defence, aerospace, automotive, railways, industrial electronics, medical devices or any product company building physical hardware. Defence or aerospace experience is preferred but not mandatory.
- Has worked on at least one product that went through formal testing, certification or customer acceptance (any standard: military, automotive, CE, IEC or similar).
- Strong in one discipline (electronics, mechanical, RF or mechatronics) with a working understanding of at least one more.
- Comfortable writing technical documents such as test reports, specifications or design notes.
- Hands on with at least one relevant tool in their own discipline, for example SolidWorks, ANSYS, MATLAB and Simulink, circuit or PCB design tools, or lab instruments such as oscilloscope, VNA or spectrum analyser.
- *4\. Desirable (training will be provided where missing)**
- Exposure to military standards such as MIL\-STD\-810, MIL\-STD\-461 or JSS 55555\.
- Experience with ATP, QTP or qualification testing, including work with external test laboratories.
- Familiarity with defence documentation and inspection practice (for example DGQA or CEMILAC type processes).
- Root cause and quality tools such as 8D, FMEA or Ishikawa.
- Exposure to indigenisation programmes, transfer of technology, or Make in India or offset projects.
- Knowledge of reliability engineering (MTBF prediction, RAM analysis, derating), functional safety, or Six Sigma and lean practices.
- Experience with ruggedised embedded systems, RF front ends, antennas, servo and stabilisation systems, or optronic payloads.
- Familiarity with PLM and ERP systems and with structured requirement management tools.
- *5\. Behavioural Competencies**
Ownership and accountability. Decisiveness under schedule and specification pressure. Clear upward and downward communication. Coaching mindset. Discipline in documentation and confidentiality. Integrity in reporting test and quality data.
- *6\. Key Performance Indicators**
- On time achievement of design, qualification and delivery milestones.
- First pass yield at ATP and qualification, and number of test repeats or non conformances.
- Closure rate and cycle time of corrective actions and customer observations.
- Documentation completeness and audit findings.
- Team attrition, competency growth and cross skilling index.
